If you're here for secrets, that party has moved.

Check out what is going on over at [info]atthesametime.

This may be annoying to some of you, as my old journals clog your "mutual friends" list, but I am ending [info]brooklynnotes. The name just doesn't ring true* anymore. I want to do something else, I want to be a bit more anonymous, and I want to try some new things, while keeping some of the old.

Please come on over and check out [info]atthesametime. There will be secrets. There will also be more images, more book reviews, and more thoughts on art and culture. There will be less photos of my ugly mug.

So there is it, come join the party [info]atthesametime

* I live in DC, I am moving to Cairo. I will live in Brooklyn again, but that is a long way off, and having a name so focused on a local geography I no longer live in seems a little weird to me now.

For the truly nerdy [Apr. 7th, 2007|11:35 am]
[Current Location |library]
[music |Velvet Underground - 10 - The Murder Mystery (Closet Mix)]

So this is my latest in internerd obsessions - the Nurse with Wound List.

Apparently, the cover of the first Nurse with Wound record was just a list of band names. Some music geeks have copied out all the names, and built wikipedia pages for many of the bands listed. Some of these bands are classic music nerd staples (Amon Duul II, AMM, Crass) others may not even be real (dadazuzu, deep freeze mice). I am going through and reading up on a lot of them and downloading what I can find on soulseek. If you're bored, take a look at the list and let me know who is worth checking out.*

* and keep in mind that if they were a cult in the 1970s who recorded their own farts and mixed it with the sound of water flowing over rocks in the ganges and recorded it only to wax cylinder, then they are totally the kind of band I want to hear.

Secret's Monday and SCOTUS and a new LJ [Apr. 3rd, 2007|11:17 am]
[Current Location |lunch room]

1. I guess its a sign of how far secrets monday has come that people view a hundred comments as a lame month. Oh well. Perhaps all the secrets have finally been told?

2. Big day at the supreme court yesterday. Good news in the EPA case. Bad news for GTMO detainees.

3. I know this must be annoying to people who have had me crowd out their friendslist, but I am ending the [info]brooklynnotes journal and starting a new journal. Details soon.

Secret's Monday [Apr. 2nd, 2007|07:11 am]
[Current Location |home]

Every month this thing keeps growing in new and interesting way. Two months ago, some of the secret sharers jumped to craigslist, last month some very serious secrets got told. This month, I have to say I am really curious to see what will happen.

TELL ME A SECRET

1) Post anonymously, I have no way of knowing who it is, IP logging is off.
2) Tell me anything you wish, it can be directed at me or it can be completely random or just something you need or want to get off your chest. Silly or serious.

I have other interests besides fashion, but when you're spending tweleve hours a day in the library, its nice to think about pretty clothes instead every once in a while.

Anyway, Hedi Slimane has left Dior.

This is pretty big news in the world of high fashion. If you're not familiar with Slimane here's a brief overview -
What you can thank Slimane for:

- The return of interest in rocknroll in high fashion

Things you can blame Slimane for:

- Pete Doughtery.

His website is worth checking out as well, here.

"This is Cost and Revs, we're taking over." [Mar. 30th, 2007|11:26 am]

1. I've been obsessed with the street artist Revs since he did the wheatpaste project with Cost in the early 90s. He is, I think, the most important street artist of all time. Now a video has appeared on youtube documenting the installation of one of his iron and steel pieces of street sculpture from back in 2004. Amazing.

Thanks to ST for pointing this out.

Some thoughts on DC fashion [Mar. 27th, 2007|05:06 pm]
[Current Location |bed]
[music |Idiot Wind-Bob Dylan-Blood On The Tracks]

1. On my way to school this morning, I saw, on a single block, seven guys all dressed in identical pleated khakis and blue oxford shirts. They looked like some sort of Hill staffer gang.

2. It is officially spring here, which means all the ladies at school are pulling out the tanks tops and cute dresses, and the dudes think its suddenly cool to wear shorts and flip flops. I just don't understand this need by men to look like they're on their way to the beach when they're sitting in a civil procedure class.

What do you think?

Shorts on full grown men?

17 (40.5%)

This fits into my larger pet peeve about the way straight men dress here*. All too often, I see a woman all dressed up for a date with some slub in a baseball hate and his undergrad sweatshirt. Seriously, dudes, WTF? Would it be too much trouble to put on pants? I mean, seriously.

3. Also, and unrelated to fashion, I really, really need to start writing this final brief, which is due on Monday, but I just can't get motivated. It's so pretty outside!

* With "here" possibly meaning all of America, save New York.

Hicks plead guilty. Which tells us only that the man would rather serve his time in Australia than at GTMO, and really, who can blame him?

Congratulations, America, we've screwed another person out of justice.

1. Best thing about spending all weekend in the library working on this brief? Making serious dent in the 2,579 songs on my computer that I haven't listened to yet.

2.

It is somewhat difficult to follow the story of the pissed off lawyers in Pakistan, but from what I've read, I think they pretty much rule.

3. I am really looking forward to a run outside today.

Wiki's are really everywhere now, and I am totally facinated by how they tap into the power of the hive.

Take for example xfamily, where a huge number of survivors of the Family of God cult are amassing an incredibly damning history of the cult, or intellipedia, classified wiki used by the US intelligance community.

I know many of you have problems with wikipedia, since it is so full of errors. Do these more small scale wikis have more of a chance of getting things right? Does anyone else have examples of interesting wikis out there? I know at one point I ran across one that was about jazz from 1980 forward that seemed interesting, but fuck if I can find it now.

Edwards is bowing out. This is sad for two reasons, his wife is apparently sick again, and of course he was a strong left canidate. Looks like the herd is contiuning to thin.

On the Republican side, I still can't figure out who it is going to be. A friend of mine who went to a young dem thing a couple weeks ago says all the Democratic strategist are saying McCain. Which probably means it'll be someone else.

Edit:
Apparently, I wrote too soon. Looks like he's staying in

For Lagerfeld, the value of all this information is less in the design ideas it might incite than as a hedge against his fear that he is slipping behind. Daily headlines, he says, “give the air of the moment. It is like music, which is like the coloration of the air. It puts you in a mood. It’s for the attitude, for the feeling. That’s why it’s important.”

Apparently, this guy is huge amongst politicos here in Washington. No wonder this country is in the shitter.

This is absolute garbage. Possibly the worst book I have ever read. Poorly plotted, poorly written, filled with absurd scenarios and charaters I didn't care about. Total waste of my time and the prime example of why I should give up my rule to finsih every book I start.

The Vocation of Man
Johann Fichte

You don't really expect me to remember what this was about, do you?* I remember Fichte as an anti-semite and a dude who was supposed to be important in relation to Hegel. That's all I got, give me a break, I read this two years ago!

*As we move further and further back, this is going to become more common.

Fortune's Formula: The Untold Story of the Scientific Betting System that Beat the Casinos and Wall Street
William Poundstone

This is a really great book that I don't think many people have read. I am not particularly good at math, and I don't really gamble, but this book on the mathematics of odds is one of my favorite kinds of books - its smart, playful and full of an eccentric mix of gangsters, MIT professors and business people who have used a variety of methods to get rich by playing the odds.

If you have any interest in how markets or gambling work this is worth checking out.

752: Levy's Nothing Serious [Mar. 13th, 2007|08:55 pm]

Nothing Serious
Justine Levy

Justine Levy is Bernard-Henri Levi's daughter. This is her novel about life with a famous father she worships and how all her boyfriends both hate and want to be her father and how none of them can win her love like her father can.

It is basically crap. When I realize I have read things like this, sometimes I wonder about myself.
